I förra veckan delade Libby Greenhalgh, tvåfaldig VOR-navigatör ombord på SCA och Scallywag, och en av dem som driver the Magenta Project, ett inlägg på sin Instagram med titeln: Where are all the women?  

Med Libbys tillåtelse delar jag det hon skrev

“Just wondering when and what it will take for landscape of some ends of sailing to change for women?” Inleder hon, och refererar till Sail GP, som drar igång sin andra säsong nästa vecka. 

“I love our sport and I think this circuit could be really good for sailing getting to the wider world but with one thing in common with 50% of the population there is not much appeal to follow with the complete absence of women going into the second season of Sail GP” 

Att nå ut till en större publik är ett kontinuerligt problem som seglingen tampas med, och kanske slår Libby huvudet på spiken här, om man hårdrar det: varför ska 50% av alla potentiella tittare följa och engagera sig I något där de själva inte är representerade?

“It is exciting times for SailGP forming a partnership with Endeavor, no doubt they globally recognise the current change in the sporting climate and the growth in women's sport and maybe this will further pro actively help make changes to be in line with the World Sailing sustainability act that this event has signed. Looking forward to seeing/hearing about how SailGP and their teams will move this forward. Maybe the slightly quieter Sail GP Spanien will be bold ones…”

Tre nya lag tillkommer till serien i år: Spanien och Danmark, där bara danskarna gått ut med sitt lag (100% män). Storbritannien som nation är fortfarande representerad, men leds nu av Ben Ainslie som ersatt Dylan Fletcher, även det laget utan kvinnlig representation. Det franska laget hade tidigare Marie Riou som flight controller ombord, den enda kvinnliga seglaren förra året, men hon kommer inte att vara med i år. Så jag antar att hoppet står till Spanien…

Avslutar hon, och öppnar upp för diskussion i kommentarsfältet. Hon får många hejarop, bland annat från mig, och från många framstående kvinnliga seglare. Ingen av de taggade männen har svarat…
