Wild Oats XI korssade mållinjen först i Rolex Sydney Hobart Race men strax efter målgången kom det in en protest. 

Det tog en dag, 19 timmar, 7 minuter och 21 sekunder för Wild Oats XI att gå i mål efter ett historiskt race, det tightaste genom tiderna. Strax efter målgång kom det in en protest på vinnarbåten från tävlingsledningen. Efter att juryn kollat närmare och börjat på fallet såg de att protesten var ogiltig och därför blev beslutet enkelt, avslås. Anledningen var att protesten bör komma från en deltagare.

"Conclusions:

1. The Race Committee’s investigation and subsequent protest arose from the report from the owner of Black Jack, a competitor in the Race and therefore a person with a conflict of interest within the meaning of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).
    
2. The Race Committee’s investigation was prudent, however in these circumstances, for the protest to be valid under the Racing Rules of Sailing, a competitor with information about a potential rule breach must lodge the protest.
