Farlig enmansfoiler?

Det holländska företaget Aeronamics har tagit fram denna enmansfoiler. Den är tänkt som en simpel båt att lära sig foila i.

Moth-jollen och Waszpen (billigare version av moth-jollen) finns ju redan. Vad är då skillnaden med Flo1? Det som talar för den är att det är en vanlig båt i grunden. Den börjar foila vid 6-8 knops vind precis som Waszpen, men innan det så kan man segla den precis som en Laser och dra upp bärplanen ur vattnet. Om man inte foilar i en Waszp är det ingen rolig båt att segla. Dessutom är Flo1 enklare att sjösätta och att vila i.

Flo1 kostar 14250€ samtidigt som en Waszp kostar 10500 dollar. Det finns som sagt fördelar med Flo1 men det är en ganska saftig prisskillnad.

En Moth-jolle är mycket mer ömtålig och dessutom mer krävande att ta hand om. Men man kan faktiskt få en relativt konkurrenskraftig Moth för samma pris som Flo1.


Det första jag tänker på när jag ser båten är hur bärplanet i lovart är placerat. Båten ska göra 20+ knop och gör man då en "nosedive" (vilket är lätt hänt) och flyger in i bärplanet som har sin vassa sida bakåt kan det gå riktigt illa.

Can I sail the boat without the lifting foils? 

Yes you can, simply lift the two lifting boards and enjoy the traditional way of sailing.


How do I launch the boat?

The string controlled lifting boards are in the up position, rudder and daggerboard are raised. Launching from a slipway is as simple as a ‘normal’ sailing dinghy. Store your trolley, push the boat away and jump in. The lifting boards stay clear from the boom so no risk for damage. After moving away from the slipway, the rudder and daggerboard can be pushed down. When you are comfortable, simply deploy the lifting boards and go!


And returning to the slipway?

Lowering the sail is easy, simply release the 2:1 halyard and lower it. No nasty high speed, uncontrollable and potentially dangerous returns to the slipway anymore. Landing with raised foils is the same as in any other conventional dinghy. No hassle.


A light boat, fragile as well?

The boat is built using sandwich epoxy laminate with carbon reinforcements. The boat is engineered with durability in mind. Carbon is put in the high load areas where it helps create a durably stiff structure.


Why a stayed rig, isn’t that complicated?

Well.. weight is the main answer. The C-Tech stayed rig is much lighter and easier to handle than an unstayed configuration. We tested a unstayed mast on the 2nd generation prototype, but this one behaves much better. The simple spreaderless rig with additional ‘lowers’ is easy to setup and to tune. Dropping the sail before landing on the slipway is made much easier without a pocket luff.


The foils

A lot of carbon is processed in the critical foil areas. The carbon fibers are placed where you really need them. This creates a stiff foil, while at the same time the flex in the foil tips create a damping effect for a comfortable ride.


What about sailors weights?

Testing will tell if larger or smaller rigs need to be offered to accommodate a wider weight range.


Why are the foils so big?

Early and comfortable foiling is the concept behind the boat. Large foils help make the boat fly at low speeds, while at the same time helping a comfortable ride at high speeds. The surface piercing tips help in the comfortable behavior without the need of an active trim flap.


Surface piercing foils?

The surface piercing configuration creates the automated ride-height. The faster you go the more the boat will rise. At the same time the foil will pierce through the waterplane and the working area of the foil is reduced, as part of it is traveling through air. (The amount of ‘cant’ adjusts the mode from skimming to flying. See the animation for an explanation of thi behavior. )


What kind of speeds will the boat reach?

The boat is designed with comfort, easiness and early take-off in mind. Absolute top speed is not the goal, although reaching 20+ knots is still very very exciting! Simply enjoy the quiet flight, no more rushing water along the hull surface.

Transport and storage

The 4,35 meter length makes the boat suitable for traditional dinghy trailers and boat parks. With the lifting boards in the up-position, the boards sit within the maximum boat beam. Removal of the foils to store them at home takes two minutes and can be done without any tools.
