Semifinalists Decided at ASP Grade-5 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior
SOUTHPORT SPIT, Queensland/Australia - Semifinalists have been decided as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-5 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 prepares to enter its final day of competition tomorrow.
For the third straight day, contest organisers were forced to relocate the event from its primary site at Burleigh Heads to the Southport Spit (Gold Coast, Qld), with contestable 0.5-1m waves providing the perfect platform for competitors to display an exciting array of maneuvers.
An overall event winner is set to be crowned amidst the celebrations of Australia Day tomorrow and after four days of intense competitive surfing action, only four competitors remain – and, they’re all Australian.
Kicking off tomorrow with Semifinal 1, local hope Blake Ainsworth (Coolangatta, Qld) will face off against top seed and 2009 ASP Australasia Junior Men’s runner-up Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW).
Ainsworth will head into the Semifinal showdown with a slight edge over Bowen, having defeated him once already in this event during the round of 16.
However, Bowen who is a highly regarded big wave surfer has shown that despite the small conditions throughout the week, he has what it takes to walk away with the USD$25,000 winner’s cheque.
The second Semifinal will be an all Queensland affair, with another Gold Coast local Mitch Crews (Currumbin, Qld) coming up against red-hot Sunshine Coaster Chris Friend (Alex Headland).
Crews had his fans on the edges of their seat in his Quarterfinal heat against an in-form Peterson Crisanto (BRA).
Needing an 8.50 ride, Crews snared a wave with less than a minute remaining, blasting multiple powerful, carving turns and registering a 9.17 (out of a possible 10) and securing a memorable Semifinal berth.
With the event concluding tomorrow on Australia Day and the four remaining surfers all being Australian, the competition and subsequent celebrations tomorrow will undoubtedly be a highlight of the 2010 ASP Australasian Junior Men’s series.
