leg 2 - countdown to the start

The breeze has picked up and so too has the crowd. The crews are going through their final preparations before sailing 4,450 nautical miles to Cochin in India.

It is a view shared by Telefonica Blue’s Pepe Ribes. His team suffered a frustrating opener, finishing fifth into Cape Town, but he expects a better showing this time. “In the last leg we had some bad luck with the problems a day in,” he said.

“We have made a few very good changes to the boat and I think we can do really well in this leg. The conditions are expected to be quite light at times and that can really help us, but we have improved downwind as well.”

One of the methods for improvement is clear for all to see. Their set of emergency rudders, which were stacked below in the first leg, are now fastened down just in front of the steering platform at the stern of the boat. “It will give us some weight at the back, that is good for downwind,” he said.
