PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii  – The final stop on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipe Masters, has called a lay day for competition this morning with smaller four foot (1.5 metre) waves on offer.

Pairing up with the ASP Dream Tour event, the Billabong Pipe Masters also represents the third jewel of the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), which boasts an impressive $50,000 prize purse for this year’s winner.

“We’ve seen a substantial in swell from yesterday and decided to call competition off for the day,” Randy Rarick, Vans Triple Crown Contest Director, said. “We’ll be back at 6:30am tomorrow to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.”

The battle for this year’s prestigious Hawaiian series is between defending Vans Triple Crown Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, and 2001 ASP World Champion C.J. Hobgood (USA), 30, who needs a Final appearance to overtake Parkinson’s crown.

Aside from the Vans Triple Crown action, yesterday’s pumping Pipeline barrels saw the culmination of the highly anticipated race for the 2009 ASP World Title when Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, clinched his second ASP World Title over close friend, Parkinson, when Parkinson failed to advance out of his Round 3 heat.

BILLABONG PIPE MASTERS QUARTERFINAL MATCH-UPS:
QF 1:
Dean Morrison (AUS) vs. Damien Hobgood (USA)
QF 2: Flynn Novak (HAW) vs. Kelly Slater (USA)
QF 3: Bede Durbidge (AUS) vs. Taj Burrow (AUS)
QF 4: C.J. Hobgood (USA) vs. Dane Reynolds (USA)
