Think you might enjoy the glamorous life of a pro..? Travelling the world is not all its made out to be as this recent tale from Peter Volwater will show.
For all of our readers who dream of a life on tour, travelling the world and sailing all the famous spots, this "day in the life" account from Peter Volwater (F2/MauiSails) may make you think twice.
After the end of last week’s Catalunya Costa Brava World Cup, Peter was all packed up and ready to head on to Gran Canaria for training, ahead of next month’s PWA Grand Slam, when along comes Robby Swift (JP/NeilPryde) with a favour to ask...... “any chance you can take a few bags to Gran Canaria for me...?”
Now, at first glance that may not seem like too much of a request, but Robby had already promised to take all of Micah Buzianis (JP/NeilPryde) and Kevin Pritchard’s (Starboard/Gaastra) bags as well. This meant that Peter’s bag tally would be a total of 31 bags of windsurfing equipment.
Undeterred by the mammoth quantity of gear, and the fact that it would be a full workout just dragging it to check in, Peter boarded the bus at 4.30 am to head to the airport in Barcelona. Luckily, Spanair were also un-phased by the quantity of luggage, but just ahead of Peter The Dunkerbeck (Starboard/Severne) entourage had already checked in 12 big bags, meaning that the plane was starting to look quite full.
Remarkably, a total of 38 bags were loaded on to the plane, leaving only 5 for a later flight, and the plane took of for Las Palmas. On arrival, it took Peter, along with some help from John Skye (RRD/Naish) and the guys from Cutre surf shop, 3 separate trips to get all the gear from the airport where finally the journey was over after 14 hours of travel.
So next time you see Peter flying high over Pozo, just remember life on tour is not all just palm trees and perfect waves!
