French one-time teen freestyle phenomenon Antony Ruenes was at an age of 21 ready for a change. He found a new home at Simmer Style. There Antony joins a fleet of freestyle sailors ready to take the podiums by storm. The EFPT asked Tomas Persson, Simmer Style's mastermind, about Antony, the team and their new sail.

EFPT: Hi Tomas, congratulations to the deal with Antony Ruenes! What qualities does a rider got to have if he wants to ride for Simmer Style?

Tomas Persson: A Simmer Style team rider needs to have a go for it attitude, pushing windsurfing to new levels every time they are on the water. As an ambassador for our brand they need to be professional both on and off the water at all times. All our riders take part in the design process and evaluations of products so they need a good understanding of the products they are using. Another important thing is loyalty to the brand, many of our riders have been on Simmer Style most or their entire career.

EFPT: How did the deal with Antony come into being?

TP: We where looking for a top French freestyler to represent us and one of our French team riders Yann Sorlut recommended Antony.

EFPT: With Yarden Meir, Edvan Souza de Pedro and Niklas Strahlen Simmer Style now has a good fleet within the EFPT. Do you expect one of your team riders to go for the title 2011?

TP: All of our riders have potential to achieve top results both in PWA and EFPT. Yarden Meir is an extremely talented young rider and both Souza and Strahlen have the potential to be the best. We are happy to support Antony, he achieved several top results when he was very young and since then he has matured a lot as an athlete. He is one of those unique sailors who can invent a new manoeuvre in the middle of a final heat, so anything is possible.

EFPT: A few days ago we read in an interview with Niklas Strahlen that the new 4 batten Blacktip is the freestyle sail? What philosophy or design principles did you have in mind during the design process of this sail?

TP: The major design objective with Blacktip was to create as much manoeuvrability and responsiveness as possible. Many of the new moves within wave-sailing are/or come from freestyle so the design principles are very similar. We wanted to create a sail with a light feel, low end power for early planing and a short boom for manoeuvrability. With one less batten to secure the shape in, the sail would normally get over powered easily, but we have used the Kevlar Stretch Control to lock the shape under, this provides a unique performance with a ultra light construction.

EFPT: Thanks for the interview and all the best for you and the Simmer Style team riders!
