GREEN DRAGON COMES HOME

Rick Tomlinson/Volvo Ocean Race | February 01/2009

Green Dragon finish 4th on leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race, in Qingdao
13:15 GMT With U2's 'Elevation' belting out - the team theme song - Green Dragon is being treated to a hero's welcome here in Qingdao. And as soon as the song ends, the 500 drummers begin drumming as the crew comes off the boat, and walks up the pontoon towards the stage for the prize-giving ceremony. It's a raucous welcome, a well-deserved reception for a team that truly battled to get here. A full story with quotes and reaction from dockside will follow shortly. And keep checking the ima... more

Caffari covers up as the Equator approaches

Dee Caffari | January 30/2009

Aviva’s mainsail suffers delamination
As Michel Desjoyeaux hurtles across the finish line in Les Sables d'Olonnes this weekend, Dee Caffari will be popping the corks on Aviva to celebrate her return to the North Atlantic. On her 80th day at sea, Dee is just 720 miles away from the Equator which she will cross just as ‘Le Professor' takes his second Vendee Globe title in nine years. "It would be nice to be in the same ocean as Foncia when Mich finishes," said Dee who is lying in seventh place less than 4,000 nautical miles... more

AN EVENTFUL NIGHT

Guo Chuan-Green Dragon | January 30/2009

Green Dragon
Ian Walker and his crew are slowly tacking upwind towards Qingdao, following a night trapped in a sea of fishing nets. Nothing is coming easy for the squad on Green Dragon on this leg, but spirits remain high as they close in on the finish line. Ian Walker reports from on board in this email, received at 03:50 GMT: "It feels a bit strange being the only ones left out racing. For a start there is no reason to look at the position reports every 3 hours as we know where we are - well w... more

BEKKING: 'HARDEST LEG OF MY LIFE'

Rick Tomlinson/Volvo Ocean Race | January 30/2009

Telefonica Blue, skippered by Bouwe Bekking, finishes first
“That is the hardest leg I have ever sailed in my life.” Bouwe Bekking is not prone to overstatements and this comment was no exception. As he hobbled off the boat onto a cold, foggy Qingdao dock, nowhere in a memory spanning five shots at this race could he recall conditions like those of the last 12 days. Be it the shoals and reefs that shredded nerves early in the leg, or the storms that brought the fleet to its knees, Bekking was more relieved to have finished than to have w... more

Tom Braidwood leads the crew in repairing damage sustained in 50 knot winds
Green Dragon - Tom Braidwood (Trimmer) Not great news for us, 4 hours after I had been in the bow checking for any signs of damage from slamming we had the big bang. The bulkhead back from the water tight bulkhead, cracked in 3 places, the cracks went from the hull through to the inside of the bulkhead and in all but one through the capping. The bulkhead has also parted from the hull skin oin local area around the cracks and allso the longerrtudinals coming off the bulkhead had come away fro... more

Morning Fire
Hello everyone! I am writing this as a little squall is passing over Roxy and we are going upwind on starboard. Yesterday was pretty full-on, as I am sailing Roxy at the top of the wind range for the solent. This is perfect sailing, except the fact that all of yesterday morning I had squalls that were shifting the wind quite considerably. This meant I was easing the sails in the gusts as we were being lifted onto a tight reach. Easing is fine (albeit noisy as the rope creaks on the winc... more
