När kiteboard kom med som olympisk klass till 2016 var det många som höjde på ögonbrynen. Att kiteboarding är spektakulärt och fartfyllt är det ingen tvekan om, men kan man verkligen segla en regatta en drake och en bräda? Allt som oftast är det höga hopp och häftiga trick som syns på till exempel youtube. Av en händelse fick jag mailkontakt med en av världens bästa kiteboardsurfare Bruno Sroka. Bruno har bland annat vunnit världscupen tre gånger och EM lika många gånger i Bankiteing.

Egentligen kom vi i kontakt när han satte nytt rekord över Engelska kanalen, vilket han gjorde den 17:de maj på 5 timmar. Dock fick jag tillfälle att ställa lite frågor om hur det fungerar med den taktik och strategi i kitesegling.

Jag ställde en del dumma frågor om vind och skitvind samt taktik så här såg vår mail korrespodans ut. Ursäkta eventuella språkliga defekter samt att frågorna ibland är längre än svaren.

Till att börja med verkar det som han nu är glad att få lite nya frågor:

Bruno: Ha! It is good finally to get the questions that are deeper then just how hard was the crossing. Finally something that we can discuss about:)

Innan vi börjar diskussionen om kitesegling och taktik.

Victor: What I´am curious about is how you think about tactics and strategic in generall, what is the key points to a good race, I dont think it´s all about speed, or? I have newer sailed kiteboard or seen any races but I have been thinking a bit about how the tactical game works in a fleet of kites. It´s obvius that the kite is really fast and spectacular but not many kiteboarders talks about strategy.

Bruno: To begin with I agree with your phrasing that the kite racing is all about tactics and strategies. Since the sport equipment and the athletes keep evolving every year, today if you wanna be the number one in kite racing you have to be ready not only physically but also think and absorb your opponents, think and prepare your planing of the course.

Victor: Also been wondering have much bad air the kite gives, is it possibly to sail in the same track close to each other on an upwind leg, or do you loose speed from the bad air?

Bruno: I shall say yes, in sailing and in kiting the bad air exists exept the fact that everything is going on in much faster speed. And contereraly to the sailing, on mistake can make huge difference in the finish line. or example if you fall you might loose 200m. for you r opponent.

In kite racing we do loose the speed if we are in the bad air shadow this is why you've got to choose the best possible position in the up wind. If no you got to move the kite constantly. Everything happens very fast though.

Victor: How many tacks is it possible to make on an upwind on the courses you tried out for the olympics, that is how much do you loose against a competitor who dosn´t needs to tack. I used to sail the laser, where it´s possible to make 30 tack on an upwind and you dont loose so much since the speed is low and accelretaion is realtivly good. Now a sail the 49er and the possibility to make tacks is smaller when the speed is higher. I would imagine the kite to be even more a "one tack class", i meen can you make gain to tack twice on a wind shift.

Bruno: As for the tacks normally it takes 1-3 tacks to go up.

En del intressanta svar, tyckte jag i alla fall. Förhoppningsvis kommer man att lära sig mer om Kiteboarding när man får se dem race:a i världscuper under nästa säsong, kanske till och med prata med en av dessa underliga seglare som inte har något riktigt skrov eller segel men ändå är ganska lika oss "vanliga" seglare.
